Not up for a marathon?

The Barr Trail Mountain Race offers runners a chance to compete on a trail best known for its prestigious marathon and ascent.

It also offers high school runners a chance to make money for their track programs.

The race, scheduled for July 14, takes runners from the Barr trailhead up to Barr Camp and back.

Aid stations along the route will be manned by runners from high school cross-country and track teams. Each of six teams that sets up and operates a station is given $1,000. At the finish line, runners vote for the best aid station, and the winner receives an additional $1,000.

Each year, the winning school is invited back. The team that won the participation challenge (with the most runners finishing the race) last year is also invited back.

The aid station competition is open to all schools in El Paso and Teller counties. Registration deadline is April 25; team names will be chosen in a drawing May 1. For information or to register, check the race web site at www.runpikespeak.com or call 685-5654.
