Notice: 2007 Race Canceled
On October 9th, at approximately 7:30pm, at a Manitou Springs city council meeting, the 2007 Manitou Springs Mayor’s Cup 5K and Kids Fun Runs were canceled because some on the Manitou Springs city council don’t seem to grasp the fact that this race is a fundraiser for the Manitou Springs Mineral Springs. Never mind that the race was started in 1985 by the mayor of Manitou (hence the “Mayor’s Cup” in the race name) to do just that.

As an all volunteer 501c3 nonprofit race organization, that in the last two years has donated $8,215.10 to the Manitou Springs Mineral Springs foundation, we were flabbergasted to once again find ourselves begging the city council for the waiver of ~$1,300 in city excise taxes and police fees in order for the race to be able to turn around and donate another ~$4,000 (100% of entry fees ) to the foundation. No matter how you slice it, it should be obvious that the race has given the city a very healthy return on investment and not just in a monetary sense at it was also a worthwhile community investment as well. As such, one would think the city council would be more supportive of events of this nature.

We are very grateful to have been supported by great sponsors, most of whom are Manitou Springs business owners and/or residents, and the runners of the race! However, it’s very frustrating to be made to feel like profiteers by the city council. Indeed, one councilwoman went so far as to imply that the race organizers made money from the event so the city fees were justified. This, despite the fact that had she read her information packet she would learn from the race finances that in 2006 the race director put up his own money to keep the race in the black.

While we took on the race two years ago with great excitement because we believed in Manitou Springs and the importance of the Mineral Springs, the city council’s policy (or lack thereof) with regard to events that directly benefit the city is simply too discouraging and disheartening. Something needs to change and until it does we have had enough. Bottom line, it should not be so hard to give away money.

At any rate, for those that have already registered, 100% of your entry fee and any extra donations you made (as well as any credit card processing fees) will be refunded.

Awards for the Emma Crawford Coffin Race Emma Rides Again!
It’s that time of year and Emma’s coming back to town so stick around after your run for the Emma Crawford Coffin Race!

Emma Crawford was a resident of Manitou who died in the late 19th century. She was buried on top of a hill in town, but rainwater washed her down to the bottom sometime after her internment. She came racing down that hillside and crashed at the bottom... hence the idea for the Emma Crawford Coffin Race. A blast for the whole family!

Manitou Springs
Hidden between the Garden of the Gods and Pikes Peak lies the magical town of Manitou Springs. Long before white men traveled here, the Ute, Cheyenne and many other natives considered this area sacred. “Manitou,” a Native American word for “spirit,” describes our beautiful mountain community. For more information head to www.manitousprings.org or call the Manitou Springs Chamber of Commerce at 1-800-642-2567.
