High School Aid Station Details
Because the stations are assigned randomly you will have no control over which station you get. Therefore, they are all listed here so that you will have a concept of what will be happening on race day, both at your station and at the other four stations.
- Combined Aid Station Details
- Each station must have a minimum of 6 students and 2 adults. To give smaller schools a chance, the upper limit is 20 total.
- Remember the voting is done by the aid station name/theme and NOT by the school name. Therefore, it is better to promote your station name/theme not your school! The reason for this is because we want the best station to win, not the most popular school. Also the schools change each year but the stations do not!
- The more fun you have and the more original you are the chances are the more votes you will get. Some schools dressed up as clowns, others went tropical. Things like bells and noise makers have been a big success as well. The point here is to do something to impress/inspire the runners just standing there in street clothes will not get you many votes! However, we request that you check with us if you are planning on doing something that could directly affect the runners. For example, one station brought Super Soakers. We allowed them but asked that the school ask permission from the runners before they soaked them. Some runners loved it and wanted it but the point was they had the option to not get wet. Another year runners were given the option of receiving a Hawaiian lei or not. Bottom line, when in doubt ask!
- Each station is responsible for leaving their area clean! No cups, energy gel wrappers or other trash should be left. Walk up and down the course a hundred yards or so from your station to check that it is clean. Even if it does not appear to be race related please pick up any trash that you might see! In addition, the Barr Camp station will be hiking down the whole trail looking for trash. However, they are NOT responsible for picking up after the other stations! The Incline Overlook station will be hiking down the last mile also looking for trash.
- Individual Aid Station Details
- Start/Finish: You will need to report to the starting line by the COG depot by 6:00am on race morning. You can drive your people and your equipment there but this is only a drop-off and someone will need to take your vehicle(s) back down to Manitou Springs to park. It is only a 3/4 mile walk back up. The race start is at 7:00am. Please make yourself familiar with the bathroom setup so you can point runners in the right direction. There is a map on the parking page. After the start you will take all of your equipment to the race finish area a few hundred yards up the road on the pullout on Hydro Street. There is a water faucet available outside of the Barr Trail trailhead restroom if you need to refill your coolers. The first runner will be down at about 8:25am. At 10:30 we close shop!
- Incline Overlook: Your day starts at 5:45am on race morning when you drive up Ruxton past the COG depot and up the section signed Private Road The race director will have opened up the gate and you will proceed up the dirt road about 1/2 mile until it ends in a small loop before a small concrete foundation. Park your vehicle(s) on the left hand (lower) half of the loop.
You will need to hike in the 80 gallons of water that will be needed at your station. The water will be in 1-gallon containers. We suggest you bring backpacks as carrying the containers in your hands is hard. Some of the water will be hiked up for you by split timers but if your crew is less than 15 you will probably need to take two trips. In that case you will want to meet even earlier perhaps 5:15am which should allow the extra trip. It is a 1 mile hike to your aid station. Counting the switch-back you are on as number one, your station is at the end of the 12th switchback. It is the switch-back that is just 10 or so yards from the Incline. There is a map on the course page.
At any rate, the first runner will be through there at around 7:15am. The last runner (on the way down) will be through at about 10:15am. On your way down use your trash bags to pick up any trash. The Barr Camp crew will be coming by after you but they have been picking up trash for 5 miles so their bags may be full so try to get it all on your section!
- No Name Creek and Bobs Road: Both of these stations have the same protocol. You will meet Search and Rescue personnel
at 5:45am on race monding at the Waldo Canyon trailhead 2 miles North of Manitou Springs on Highway 24. You MUST have 4-wheel drive vehicles as you
will be driving about 4 miles up Longs Ranch Road to your station. Search and Rescue is in charge and will be your escort to your station.
They have authority to do what is safest for all involved. Here are special instructions
from El Paso County Search and Rescue about the drive up Longs Ranch Road.
About 3 miles up Longs Ranch Road you will split up with the No Name Creek crew
going left and the Bobs Road crew going right. Set up your stations when you arrive. First runner for the NNC crew will be between
7:25a.m and 7:30a.m. First runner for the BR crew will be between 7:35am and 7:40. Last runner (on the way down) for the BR crew will be
around 9:45am and for the NNC will be around 10:00am.
- Barr Camp: The day before the race you will meet at 9:00am (to beat the afternoon thunderstorms) at the
Pikes Peak Highway toll booth. A BTMR committee member will provide passes to get you through the tollbooth. You will
proceed to the Elk Park turn-off which is about 3/4 mile past the Glenn Cove brake check point. Your cars and/or vans can NOT
stay so you will need additional students or parents to act as a taxi service. Those working the station will hike the six
miles into Barr Camp.
Indoor accommodations and prepared food will NOT be available so you MUST bring tents and food for your
entire crew for Saturday lunch and dinner and Sunday breakfast! A $150 food subsidy will be provided by the race.
Snacks, drinks, prepackaged freeze dried meals, and dehydrated meals (hot water included) are available for purchase from Barr Camp.
In addition to your personal gear, you will also take a small amount of race equipment; paper cups, powdered drink, trash bags and two water
filters. Once you arrive at Barr Camp you need to filter at least 80 gallons of water from the stream. Operational details will be provided
at the mandatory equipment pickup meeting.
On race morning you will need to be completely set up and
ready by 7:40am. The first runner will be through between 7:50 and 7:55am. Please help direct runners to the turnaround area so they
dont just turn around at your aid station. The split timers and turnaround crew have the authority to move you a few feet if
need be so be safe and just stay out of their way. The last official runner should be through around 9:20am and you are free to dismantle
after 9:30am. Search and Rescue will handle any stragglers. You will need to hike down the Barr Trail 6 miles to get back to civilization.
On the way down you will serve as the course sweeps as far as trash goes.
Depending on your hiking speed you may need to send one team member
ahead to represent your team at the awards ceremony. Or you can have someone else from your school already there to represent you. The HS
Challenge portion of the ceremony usually comes around 11:30am.
